Supporting Malaiyaha Community Housing in Monaragala District

Project Purpose

To support selected families from the Malaiyaha (Upcountry) community in the Monaragala District by repairing unsafe housing conditions and making their homes safer and more liveable.

Project Overview

In 2025, Serendip Children Home Charity identified over a hundred families within the Upcountry community (one of our targeted groups) whose house roofs were in urgent need of repair. Recognising this need, Maanudam Foundation UK committed to funding roof repairs for up to six of these family homes.

Serendip selected seven family homes on the Bibile Rubber Estate in the Monaragala District. In this estate, there are descendants of plantation workers who have contributed to Sri Lanka's tea and rubber industries for nearly two centuries, and they continue to live in deteriorating colonial-era line rooms or small mud structures. These cramped, barely habitable spaces offer little protection from harsh weather, making daily life even more challenging.

This phase of the project, with a total budget of £3,445, was generously funded by Mr. Shan & Mrs. Rajanayaky Selveratnam (Malaysia) through the Maanudam Foundation (UK).

Thanks to the dedication of Serendip team and volunteers in the local area, roof repairs have now been completed on six homes.

This initiative is about more than repairing roofs - it is about restoring a sense of security, dignity, and basic comfort to families who have long been overlooked.

Maanudam Foundation extends heartfelt thanks to the Serendip team and volunteers for their commitment and hard work, and we look forward to partnering on similar projects in the future.
